We, the Don Bosco community in a Catholic institute of higher learning, are passionate about the young becoming committed and highly qualified in integral education and innovative technology.
Incarnating the Preventive system of Don Bosco, we accompany each other, especially the marginalized youth, in a family atmosphere of life-long learning and through an open network of relationships, to be servant leaders for social transformation.
1. Servant Leadership
Passion for volunteerism and selflessness. Servant-leaders develop an innate capacity to come up with everyday ideas of serving others as responsible stewards, who use their God-given and acquired resources with prompt and joyful availability.
The members of the Educative Pastoral Community (EPC) of DBTI are animated in fulfilling their common mission with the commitment of serving others amid their daily duties. They are convinced that as they share their individual giftedness in charity and joy, whether as leaders or followers, they participate in the fulfilment of God’s plan as they model their lives on Jesus, Servant of the Father. With enthusiasm and industry, they pursue excellence, enhance productivity and exercise shared responsibility in DBTI’s growth.
2. Rapport/Loving Kindness
Loving and trusting relationship that builds up confidence and leads to profound communication, eventually spreading out and creating a family atmosphere, where being together is beautiful and enriching.
Drawing from the kindness and gentleness of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, and members of DBTI community practice authentic love in a family environment through the language of simplicity, cordiality, cheerfulness, compassion, patience and animating presence. Living St. John Bosco’s belief that “education is a matter of the heart,” educators and young people form a bond of familiarity and communion as they collaborate around a project of integral education of the young.
3. Life-Long Learning
The attitude that encourages us to pursue knowledge and truth throughout our lives in ways that assist all the members of the community to develop their full potentials.
DBTI is committed to nation building and social transformation by imparting knowledge and skills that enhances poverty-alleviation, productivity, entrepreneurship, gainful employment and respectful standing in society. The institution actively participates in innovative technological education and research through constant upgrading, on-going formation and making linkages with various stakeholders and agencies.
Gift and art of integrating with God’s grace diverse aspects of our life: prayer and action, love for God and for one’s neighbor, education in human values and the proclamation of the gospel, belonging to a group and being part of the Church.
The EPC of DBTI shares the Salesian spirituality, which is a spirituality of encountering and witnessing Jesus in daily life, of communion with the Church, of joyful and responsible service, looking to Mary as mother, helper, teacher and guide.
Being truthful and trustworthy to oneself and to others, assuring personal and institutional coherence between beliefs and attitudes, between words and actions, thus empowering all to be catalysts of moral transformation in society.
DBTI staff and students, individually and as community, maintain a high sense of duty and respect for rules and lawful authority. They uphold truth and justice and peacefully yet resolutely reject any form of violence and corruption.
The act of valuing oneself and others by cultivating a healthy self-confidence and being open to diverse people, ideas, perspectives and cultures.
Since its beginning until now, the administrative and teaching staff of DBTI have come from different countries and backgrounds and have collaborated in maintaining an open, productive and harmonious educative environment. Students themselves, coming from all the provinces of Papua New Guinea and even beyond, feel welcome and integrated into the community. All are encouraged to develop and share their unique capabilities despite differences in gender, culture and religious beliefs, acknowledging and respecting the rights and duties of all.
A firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good; that is to say to the good of all and of each individual, because we are all really responsible for all.
DBTI promotes social engagement, whether through small groups among classes, youth groups, cultural or interest clubs and spontaneous encounters or through community activities involving the educative pastoral community. In these gatherings, the members experience and develop dialogue, teamwork, collaboration and hospitality. These values enable them to be involved in relevant social concerns and reach out to other disadvantaged groups and those on the peripheries, through networking with different groups and organizations.
